Shawne Wickham of the Union Leader’s Sunday News Staff reports on three New Hampshire families who are counting their blessings this time of year. The Nelsons of Concord, NH, are one of them.
Two years ago, Nicole Nelson was diagnosed with aplastic anemia; her daughter, Katie, was just a year old. During the frustrating and frightening search for a bone marrow donor match, Nelson nearly died, even as her extended family and the community rallied to help her. She eventually underwent a life-saving cord-blood stem cell treatment.
Nicole Nelson said she tries not to dwell on all she missed during her long illness. Instead, she savors her time with Katie who is now three years old. "Every moment is that much more special," she said. "I'm so grateful that I'm here.”
